Alsace’s Christmas Markets

Not far from Saint-Hippolyte, start by exploring the Riquewihr Christmas market, worth a visit as much for seeing its richly decorated chalet stalls as seeing the town’s traditional half-timbered façades and medieval ramparts. Of course, don’t forget to try some of the mulled wine - you are on the Alsace Wine Route, after all! Less than 30 minutes away by car in the same direction, you can also visit the Kayersberg Christmas market, where you can enjoy a truly magical Christmas atmosphere in the splendid and highly authentic setting of this famous medieval village. Then in Tuckenheim, a bit further south, you’ll be able to enjoy a more relaxed atmosphere. The village is notable for its astonishing oversized Advent calendar!

After exploring the quaint villages of the Ribeauvillé and Riquewihr area, it’s time to head further afield and enjoy the Christmas market in Strasbourg. Launched in 1570, it is one of the oldest Christmas markets in all of Europe and is the largest Christmas market in all of France. A truly iconic institution, you have to experience it at least once in your life.

For an altogether different atmosphere, Colmar is an excellent choice. From November onwards, all the buildings in the medieval town centre are adorned in the finest colours. Discover this fairytale atmosphere along the old town’s streets and by the canals in the Petite Venise district.
